A Weekend Getaway
As the weather warms up I find myself wanting to venture out of town for a weekend day trip. At just under four hours by car, Asheville is a quick and easy drive from Charleston. What I love about Asheville are the scenic views and endless opportunities to grab a bite to eat. My ideal day trip involves seeing a mountain or two, a brewery visit, and a slice of pizza to end the day. To start the day off take a picturesque drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and check out Mt. Mitchell, it is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Only a 35 mile jaunt from downtown it offers an incredible view from atop its high peak. Be warned, as you climb in elevation do not let the sun fool you, it is going to get cold quick once you near the top!
No trip to Asheville would be complete without a brewery adventure. There is no shortage of places to grab a drink in Asheville: places such as New Belgium, Wicked Weed, and Hi-Wire. Each spot has a distinct feature I love about it. For New Belgium it is the view along the French Broad River.
Wicked Weed has a lovely outdoor patio with a nice warm fire pit, as well as some interesting and unique brews for those adventurous souls.
Then Hi-Wire is a cozy little spot featuring pinball machines, and on my last visit there were plenty of beautiful dogs enjoying the camaraderie that this brewery has to offer.
Finally to end the day I personally enjoy grabbing a unique slice of pizza to complete my trip. One of my favorite spots is called Pizza Mind. Two of my favorite pies are their Taco pizza and then their Carolina BBQ pizza. A wonderfully dense yet airy crust makes this pizza a home run in my book.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of places to check out in Asheville, but its my humble list of places I enjoy and find myself wanting to go back and visit. Let us know what some of your favorite spots are!
