What’s Happening in Charleston: MAY
Gibbes Street Party May 3
The Gibbes Art Museum hosts a yearly street party celebrating art and food, this year’s theme is ‘Paint your Palate’. Participating chefs are challenged to create small plates inspired by spring color trends such as military green, sky blue and rose. There are over twenty participating restaurants this year including Chez Nous (read about my obsession, here), The Obstinate Daughter, Hall’s Chophouse and Le Farfalle. For more information on the event, visit: https://gibbesstreetparty.wordpress.com/
Dragon Boat Festival May 5
Taking place on the Ashley River, The Charleston Dragon Boat Festival is one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the country and a celebration of cancer survivors with proceeds benefiting cancer survivor programs. For more information on the race visit: www.charlestondragonboatfestival.com
Charleston Beer Garden May 19
Charleston Beer Garden is a day of beer, food trucks and ‘epic fun’. With over 30 breweries present and over 60 beers on tap, the suds will be flowing! Some of Charleston’s biggest food trucks will be present including Roti Rolls, Platia, King of Pops and Root Note. There will also be live music, the opportunity to shop from local vendors, and games and activities including life-size Jenga, a keg toss competition and pony hop racing. Spoleto Festival May 25-June 10
The Spoleto Festival is one of the most incredible events held in Charleston every year. The purpose of the event is to present programs of the highest artistic caliber including performances in opera, theater, dance; and symphonic, choral and jazz music. The seventeen day festival is in its 42nd season and recognized as America’s premier performing arts festival. What I find incredibly neat about Spoleto is the diversity of the performances, this year's performers include Miami City Ballet, The Pied Piper (Italian marionette theater), Backbone (acrobatic theater), Bank of America Chamber Music, The Westminster Choir and You are Mine One (cinematic poetry with orchestral scores). This list is just a small sample of the performances that will be taking places at Spoleto, for a complete schedule visit: https://spoletousa.org/current-season/schedule/
Piccolo Spoleto May 25-June 10
While the Spoleto Festival brings performers from all over the world, Piccolo Spoleto is a festival within the Spoleto Festival that focuses on more regional performers from the Southeast. Despite it being a festival within a festival, it is by no means small (the program alone is 70+ pages) festival activities include children’s programs at the library, family day at Marion Square, a sand sculpting contest, a Memorial Day concert and much more. Some performers that will be featured this year are: Get off my Bach, Charleston Academy of Music, Great Gig Dance Ensemble and Gillian Gardner. One of the really great things about the festival is that there are many affordable (under $25) performances and even free activities! Check out this years schedule at https://www.piccolospoleto.com/
